Mars Climate Orbiter (1999)

The problem

NASA lost contact with the Mars Climate Orbiter probe due to a software error caused by the incorrect use of units of measurement. One team used the English system (pounds) while another used the metric system (newtons).

The consequences

The probe entered the Martian atmosphere and was destroyed, causing damages of approximately $125 million.

The lesson

Consistent standards and thorough software testing are crucial, especially for complex, safety-critical projects.
